Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient modality where needles are inserted into specific points in the body in order to generate a therapeutic effect. There is no drug injected or coated on the needle, so acupuncture utilizes the body’s own healing powers to balance the body. One can think of the needles as little antennae that send signals to the brain and body to guide healing and attention to certain areas. Sometimes the body is lost and confused about what to do, and the acupuncture needles create some ‘instructions’ for the body to start the healing process!

Herbal Medicine

Herbal remedies and traditional Chinese medicine at Chen Family Acupuncture

Herbal prescriptions in Traditional Chinese Medicine are commonly called ‘formulas’ because they are formed by either cooking or preparing multiple herbs together. Single herb prescriptions like commonly seen herbal supplements are rare.

Within Chinese Medicine theory, herbs can interact with one another to generate a stronger therapeutic effect while moderating potential side effects. A basic formula typically contains around 4 herbs, but some can get rather complex and contain over 10 herbs. Herbalists spend a large amount of their education not only learning individual herbs, but also these formulas that have been tried and tested over 100’s of years. For example, one of the most important texts for TCM herbal medicine, the Shang Han Lun, dates back to around 200 CE. Formula prescriptions from this text are still used extensively to this day for a wide range of conditions.
